Q: I want to improve the firmness of my skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Are there any products which give immediate results?

Q: I want to improve the firmness of my skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Are there any products which give immediate results?

A: A million wrinkle creams and anti-aging  products that are sold in drugstores and online all come with a promise reduce the appearance of wrinkles and some even claim to prevent further wrinkles and sun damage. In fact, 80% of facial wrinkles are due to sun exposure while only 20% are due to aging and repeated facial expressions. The great news is that today we have access to a wide variety of over-the-counter anti-wrinkle products at our fingertips that can seriously improve these facial flaws. The effectiveness of wrinkle creams and how long they take to provide results, however, will depend on the active ingredients contained in the product.

If you are looking for immediate results, a proven ingredient to look for is Matrixyl. Botanical Bio-Peptide Concentrate by Skin Rx contains this amino peptide in combination with other effective ingredients to produce an immediate reduction in surface wrinkles as well as added benefits to build collagen, regenerate cells, detoxify, and more, as you continue to use it on a regular basis.

The key ingredient, Matrixyl, works by stimulating fibroblasts in the skin to kick-start collagen production where it had previously slowed down due to the aging process. This fatty acid, combined with amino acids, has been proven in scientific studies to increase collagen production by about 117% and to increase the synthesis of hyaluronic acid in the skin by about 267% which leads to dramatic improvements of even the deepest wrinkles. In trials, fine lines were completely faded away while deeper wrinkles and facial expression lines were decreased by at least 50%.

So, the answer is “Yes”. There are products, like Botanical Bio-Peptide Concentrate by Skin Rx, which can not only give you immediate improvements in the appearance of your wrinkles but can also help improve your skin over time with continued use.

The Incredible Shrinking Pores!

large_pores1.jpg picture by tiffanymarlene

The pores you have are important to the health of your skin as they work to provide oil in order to keep your skin soft, hydrated, and supple. Not that you want to be reminded of them each time you look at yourself in the mirror, especially if you have large, visible pores that you hate to look at. Your pores can appear larger when they are clogged with oil and dirt or bacteria, so it is important to keep your skin clean and use the right products to keep your pores from getting clogged in the first place. Blackheads are a major factor to large pores. If your pores get clogged with dirt and bacteria, the oil inside the pores will start to build up, causing the pores to expand in diameter.

What Else Causes Visible Pores?

Besides your pores being clogged, there are two other things which can mean visible pores: age and genes. Those who have naturally oily, thick skin are the ones who tend to get stuck with large pores. That is all genetics and there’s nothing you can do about that! Also, as we age, damage from the sun as well as a natural decrease in the skin’s elasticity can cause pores to open up or dilate. The skin then begins to thicken, causing the tiny skin cells to build up around the edges of our pores which ultimately makes them appear larger.

Can Pores Really Shrink?

Sorry but no – there is no magic trick that will permanently shrink large pores. Fortunately, though, the appearance of visible pores can be significantly reduced in a variety of ways. Just by cleansing your face of dirt, bacteria, and excess oil will greatly reduce their appearance. Exfoliation is another method to minimize the prominence of large pores. You can do this by using an at-home microdermabrasion treatment. Microdermabrasion works to gently scrub off the dead visible layers of the facial skin to reveal softer, smoother, and healthier skin below.

Skin Rx recommends Microdermabrasion Peel Kit #1 – A unique combination of microdermabrasion crystals and glycolic acid in one which is a great solution to visible pores.

Facial Melasma – Alternatives to Laser Skin Treatments

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a skin disorder which can affect both men and women; however it is more common for women to have the condition. It is often seen on women during pregnancy and is sometimes called the “mask of pregnancy”. It appears on the face as a skin rash which is darker in color than the rest of the skin and has irregular borders. Melasma usually looks like a symmetrical pattern on the cheeks, nose, lips, and/or forehead. It may also appear on the upper arms. The skin darkening can be greatly varied in color.

Melasma has been seen in all ethnicities and cultures but it is much more common in Arabs, Hispanics, Asians and North Africans or in those who have higher levels of melanin in their skin. People with fair skin may also experience melasma, albeit a lighter shade which is not always easy to spot.

Alternatives to Laser Skin Resurfacing

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a common and effective treatment option for melasma. Microdermabrasion is a good option for you if:

  • You are looking for a treatment which involves no down-time
  • You prefer a treatment which is minimally-invasive
  • You are seeking an option for melasma with little to no side effects

Professional Microdermabrasion results at home

Microdermabrasion works by sanding the outer skin layers off in order to remove dead skin cells. This process renews the skin’s texture and pigmentation. It works by using tiny crystals (or other abrasive substance) which are applied onto the skin’s surface with a special tool. The crystals are removed, and immediately the skin’s appearance is improved. Since microdermabrasion treats only the top layers of skin, there is hardly any risk involved and little to no side effects at all. Microdermabrasion can be done in the comfort and privacy of your own home whenever you have free time.

Skin Rx recommends Microdermabrasion Kit #4.

Skin Lightening Cream

Skin lightening creams work to lighten skin by decreasing the production of melanin pigment granules at different stages while also breaking down the melanin already present. Hydroquinone is the active ingredient in most skin lightening creams and can be purchased without a prescription at up to 2% concentration. This highly effective treatment for melasma is inexpensive, non-invasive, and typically has no side effects.

If you want to try a skin lightening cream to treat your melasma, try Skin Rx’s Skin Lightener.

If you are not ready for a laser skin treatment and want to try real alternatives with proven results, microdermabrasion or skin lightening creams may be right for you.

The Mystery of Keratosis Pilaris

Keratosis Pilaris on the arm.

Whether mild or severe, Keratosis Pilaris is not a pleasant thing to deal with. Maybe you didn’t even realize you had an actual “skin condition” and just thought it was dry skin or ingrown hairs. The fact is, Keratosis Pilaris is somewhat of a mystery to many people who have it. It’s not a serious medical condition, and for most people, Keratosis Pilaris often resolves itself eventually. While you have it though, it can make you feel self-conscience about the appearance and texture of your skin.

What is Keratosis Pilaris?

According to The Mayo Clinic, Keratosis Pilaris is “a common skin condition that causes rough patches and small, acne-like bumps, usually on the arms and thighs.” The condition is often difficult to treat and is caused by the build-up of keratin which blocks hair follicles. Dry skin can exacerbate the problem. People with Keratosis Pilaris will notice small bumps that may appear like acne, rough patches, and skin-colored bumps which are generally painless.

Treatment

Skin Rx offers several products to help treat Keratosis Pilaris. With a bit of extra care in your daily skin care routine, you can smooth and soothe your skin.

Microdermabrasion Peel Kit #1 – The microdermabrasion peel is a great treatment for Keratosis Pilaris as it exfoliates and smoothes the skin to balance out the uneven texture.

Skin Recovery Crème – This non-greasy moisturizer is made to heal and repair sensitive skin and is free from oils, perfumes, and dyes.

How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs

ingrownhairs.jpg picture by tiffanymarlene

Prevent embarrassing ingrown hairs!

Yes, ingrown hairs can be VERY itchy….No, it is not okay to reach into your bikini bottoms to scratch them out in public!!

An ingrown hair is one that grows out into surrounding skin instead of directly through the hair follicle. Ingrown hairs irritate the skin, which creates papules (also called razor bumps).

Because we want our readers to know how to prevent ingrown hairs and the embarrassing scenario pictured above, we are posting these useful tips:

Exfoliate!

Ingrown hairs can be easily prevented with regular exfoliation. Exfoliating sloughs off any dead skin cells and opens your pores. This allows the hair to exit the skin cleanly without curling back in.

Shave Properly!

You should be shaving in the direction your hair grows – not against it. Also, don’t use too much pressure, let the razor do the work. Try not to shave over the same spot repeatedly, either. Lastly, invest in a good razor. Dollar store disposables are no good!

Moisturize!

Daily moisturizing of the skin is a MUST in order to prevent ingrown hairs. Cleansing and proper moisturizing keep the skin supple and smooth which helps the hair grow in the right direction. Be sure to use a moisturizer that will not clog the pores.

For ingrown hairs, Skin Rx recommends the following products for treatment and prevention:

Tweeze Kit #4 – Includes pointed tweezers, Brow Fix Gel, and PFB Vanish roll-on gel.

Herbal Moisture Crème – An intense moisturizer that lasts all day.

Oh The Joys of Pregnancy!

Model: Paola Pacheco Photography: José Miguel Serrano

While it is a miracle to bring a life into this world, pregnancy certainly isn’t always easy. There is the weight gain, stretch marks, nausea, and even sacrificing food and drinks you normally love for the health of your baby. Then there are the women whose feet grow half a size for each baby born to them…not a very pleasant side effect, especially if you already have big feet!

On top of all of that, many women also must deal with hyperpigmentation of the skin during pregnancy, too. This darkening of the skin can cause embarrassment, especially at a time when a woman is already self-conscience about her self image. Hyperpigmentation during pregnancy is caused by pregnancy hormones. These hormones can cause an over production of melanin, which is the pigment in our skin.

During pregnancy, freckles, scars, and moles can appear darker and the “mask of pregnancy” may also make an appearance. This “mask” often looks like dark splotchy patches all over the face which can become worse with each pregnancy.

Hyperpigmentation can not be treated during pregnancy, but after the baby is born, there are effective products to lighten the skin back to normal. Since you can not use products to treat the condition during pregnancy, it is recommended to wear a strong sunscreen at anytime you will be exposed to the sun, as the UV rays do make the condition appear worse.

The spots that do remain after pregnancy are likely to fade over time, but it may seem like forever if you leave it to nature to get your skin back to normal. If you want to use a treatment for your pregnancy hyperpigmentation, Skin Rx recommends:

Skin Lightener – with 3% Kojic Acid and 2% Hydroquinone, this is a powerful skin lightener that will eliminate stubborn dark patches on the skin

Also try:

Skin Lightening Kit – with the Skin Lightener, Microdermabrasion Peel, and Advanced Protection SPF 30 which work together for maximum results.

How Old Do You Look?

“May I see your ID, please?”

When was the last time you heard that question? If your face is starting to see its share of fine lines, the answer is probably “not lately”. By taking care of your skin properly and using the right skin care products, you may be getting carded well into your 40’s!

You don’t have to be rich or famous to look younger than your real age. You just have to make it a habit to take good care of your skin and body. This means getting regular exercise, drinking lots of water, taking your vitamins, and of course, exfoliating, moisturizing, and using anti-aging products.

Exfoliating

Exfoliating your skin is the best way to keep it young and healthy-looking as it provides instant results. Buffing away that thin layer of dead skin cells immediately reveals the more youthful, glowing skin beneath. Exfoliation can also prevent clogged pores and blackheads. For the best exfoliation, try Skin Rx’s Microdermabrasion Kit #1.

Moisturizing

Moisturizing your face is the key to restoring the natural hydration that your skin tends to lose, especially as you age. Young skin is well hydrated, and therefore much suppler, than dry skin. A good moisturizer includes ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, which have been proven effective by skin care experts. Skin Rx suggests this Ultra Hydration Serum.

Wrinkle Cream

Using anti-aging products which are formulated to reduce the appearance of fine lines is a great way to look younger than you are. Skin Rx offers several anti-aging products with proven results that work to fight wrinkles such as PepTox Wrinkle Relaxing Crème.

What to do if your dull skin doesn’t match your glowing personality…

If you are concerned that your skin has lost its glow, your dull skin needs some TLC! As an adult, dull skin is a common problem. During your youthful teenage years, the skin exfoliates itself naturally about every two weeks so fresh, glowing skin is revealed while the dull, lifeless dead skin cells are shed. This exfoliation process helps to keep the skin youthful and gives that “glow” that we all want.

If you are a smoker, dull skin is often a side effect. When the blood flow and oxygen to your skin is decreases due to the toxins of cigarette smoking, you tend to develop dry, dull skin which is prone to fine lines and crow’s feet.

With a few simple skin care techniques and some TLC, you can brighten up your complexion and get your glow back!

Besides the obvious of not smoking, it is important to stay hydrated. The more water you drink, the better your skin looks. Six to eight glasses of water a day is a must if you want your complexion to look its best.

Exfoliation is the best way to shed dull, dead skin cells and rejuvenate your complexion to reveal more youthful skin. Microdermabrasion is a great way to achieve maximum results if you really want to brighten up your complexion. Skin Rx recommends Microdermabrasion Peel Kit #1 which features an exclusive “double peel” technology and an all natural formula.

You will also want to make sure you are replacing any moisture loss to your skin which can happen as a result of the upcoming cold weather. A good quality moisturizer should be applied directly after cleansing the skin. Try Skin Rx’s Herbal Moisture Crème 2 which can replace moisture loss to even the driest skin.
