Kojic Acid and Skin Lightening

Since its discovery by the Japanese twenty years ago, kojic acid products have taken the skin care industry by storm. It’s an alternative that’s natural yet still very effective.

This mushroom extract is an extremely popular skin lightening treatment. Many use it for overall skin whitening for pigmentation problems, including as an age spot and freckle remover. Today it is used in a wide array of products, including kojic acid lotion, cream, and soap.

But before we discuss the products, you should first learn a little bit about the history of this ingredient. Kojic acid comes from a type of fungi (mushrooms) and can be harvested from numerous species. It can also be derived from plant sources too, such as the case during rice fermentation. Originally discovered in Japan in the 1990′s, It has many uses, so many that it not only doubles as an ingredient in beauty products, but it is also used in Japanese cuisine. Many people use this product for skin bleaching of freckles, treatment for age spots, or a skin disorder called melasma. Dealing with various types of problems can have an effect on a person’s self esteem so it is no surprise that people do whatever they can to find ways to diminish or cure these flaws.

Is it safe?
There have been many claims in regards to this compound being a safe product to use on the skin. It has been said that although it does not appear to have carcinogens, which are known to cause cancer, it does seem to have an adverse effect on a number of peoples skin who had used it regularly and for an extended period of time; skin sensitivity, which can ultimately lead to a skin condition called allergic contact dermatitis. In order to counter this side effect, researchers found that by adding another ingredient called hydroquinone helps.

How is it used?
Kojic acid products are most often applied to the skin topically, in the form of a cream, lotion, or serum. The usual recommended dosage of kojic acid is relatively small. Of course, one must also take into consideration how this skin lightening treatment will react with their individual body. Those who experience sensitivity may need to apply it less frequently and re-evaluate their usage.

Our Unique, highly effective formula is light weight, oil free, non-greasy and for any skin type. Contains 3% Kojic Acid, 2% Hydroquinone, and Glycolic acid. Whether you have dark spots, dark shading, or discolorations on your face, body, hands, or arms from sun damage, old acne, or use of medications. Skin Rx Skin Lightening Gel is a highly effective solution that will eliminate the skin discolorations that are so difficult to get rid of!

New shades added to Ultra Sensitive Mineral Makeup line

We’ve recently added two new shades (with a third coming soon!) to our line of Ultra Sensitive Loose Mineral Bases.

Please find the shade comparison chart below for those of you who may have used our Original Loose Mineral Base in the past, but now want to give our Ultra Sensitive a try.   Ultra Sensitive Loose Mineral Base is a must for anyone with Rosacea , acneic or  reactive, sensitive skin.

Naturally preserved and completely free of irritants, we’ve taken the best qualities of mineral makeup and applied them to our new Ultra Sensitive Loose Mineral Base: a light-weight feel with the option of layering for more coverage as needed, the simplicity of an all-in-one concealer and foundation, it’s non-comedogenic and bacteria-resistant properties, it’s natural & inert ingredients, and it’s natural anti-inflammatory properties. All of these properties leave you with the best qualities makeup can offer while leaving out those which can add to those sensitive skin issues.

Silky, weightless and very forgiving, Ultra Sensitive Mineral Base goes on easy and feels like nothing at all, naturally. It evens out your skin tone, enhances your complexion and reduces the appearance of fine lines and pores.  So go ahead, nourish your delicate skin while getting the beautiful coverage and finish you need.

Makeup Tip: Bigger, Brighter Eyes!

Here are a couple easy tips on how to brighten up your eyes and make them look bigger.

Apply concealer on the side of your nose by the inner corner of the eye to cover up darkness.  Use concealer or highlighter on your dark circles as well, but keep to the inner corner-mid eye area to avoid exaggerating of fine lines. This will illuminate the eye area.

Apply highlighter or light (silver, white, light gold, light beige) eye shadow in the inner corner of the eye on upper eyelid and just a touch on the lower eyelids.

Offset redness and open up your eyes by lining inner eye rims with a light nude eye pencil.

Curl your lashes and finish with a black mascara.  When applying focus on the middle of your upper and lower eye lashes. This way your eyes will look much bigger.

At the end of the day, do not retire without first cleansing your skin with a mild facial wash that gently removes makeup and other residue which can add to skins sensitivity.    Skinrxclinic’s  Gentle Eye Makeup Remover,  which quickly dissolves eye make up without irritation, is a must for any vanity.

This is an oil-free,  fragrance-free formulation designed especially for the sensitive, delicate  tissue around the eye area.

Your peeps will thank you!

Glycolic Acid and Retin A use

Question:

I purchased the Glycolic Kit. However, I also have retina A at home.   Can I use both products or do they contradict each other?

Answer:

Glycolics actually work well in conjunction with other types of products such as Retin-A, Retinol, Vitamin C, and bleaching agents. With prescription-strength products, it is recommended that you alternate usage of the glycolic and the prescription product to avoid possible irritation.

Help for brown spots, hyperpigmentation

Question: Which products are recommended for my “brown spots”?

Answer:

The “brown spots” you refer to is hyperpigmentation which can be caused by sun damage, hormones, and even incorrectly performed laser treatments. I have included a couple of Skin Rx Clinic’s recommended products to help address this issue, as well as some general information regarding hyperpigmentation.

First, our Skin Lightening Kit, which includes our very own Microdermabrasion Peel, a gentle, yet effective exfoliant. Skin Lightener Gel, a light weight, oil free, non-greasy formula enriched with 3% Kojic Acid, 2% Hydroquinone, and Glycolic acid to help fade unsightly spots. And Advanced Protection SPF 30, to help protect your precious new skin from the further sun damage.  This exclusive formula lightly moisturizes skin, and drenches it with skin enhancing Green Tea, Vitamins C and E, Vitamin A and Ginseng/Ginko Biloba/Licorice extracts for anti-aging.

Second, our Glycolic Peel Kit #1, which includes our ever popular 30% Glycolic Acid Peel, Prep and applicator fan brush with dish, everything you need to perform a professional strength peel at home!

You will save hundreds of dollars compared to what a Doctor’s office or Salon charges. Your skin will glow with healthy radiance, lines and sun damage will fade, acne, large pores, blackheads, and oily skin will clear up. Your skin will look healthy and smooth, well-rested. You might just get asked where you went on your vacation!

Both of these kits are best-sellers, and are easy to apply. It is truly a matter of personal preference when choosing which method is right for you. I prefer the Microdermabrasion Peel to get started with. If you find you require further lightening to this method, you may continue with the Glycolic Peel kit in the future. It is important to remember that this is a treatment process, and while you will feel results after your first treatment, seeing your results will take longer.

Products for my mature, dry skin

mature skin

beautiful mature skin

Question:

I am 61 years old.

I consider my skin dry.

I use the glycolic peels already, and I want to purchase other products, but am confused as to what to get.

Would you recommend this -

Gel cleaner

Hydra Essence Toner

Herbal moisture creme

Liquid silk

D20 mist spray

I am just confused as to which moisturizer, etc. to get. I also saw where you have Pro-Med retinal face cream…..

Is this a moisturizer so you wouldn’t use herbal moisture creme?

I want to start (slowly) to try your other products. Can you help me select which to start out with?

I saw face firming complex – but would I use that with moisturizer also?

Please, just send me any info on “how to get started” with the “switch” to your products.

I have clear skin, olive complexion. Looks a lot younger than the 61 years and I would like to keep it that way.

Thanks for your time.

Answer:

Thank you for your recent interest in our products! You are correct in your suggestions. I would recommend the Arnica Facial Wash for a creamy cleanser if you prefer a more gentle cleanser for mature, dry skin. If you prefer an oil-free cleanser, the Glyco-lactic Gel Cleanser is a popular one for all skin types. This also doubles as a body wash if you find it too drying for your face. Hydra Essence toner is an excellent hydrator for sensitive, dry skin. I am in my early forties and I love the Herbal Moisture Creme as a night treatment as I am not overly dry. You could use this creme day and night, followed by the Liquid Silk for the ultimate in hydration. The Liquid Silk is rich in pure oil extracts, and brings about a rosy, healthy glow to the skin as it hydrates and rejuvenates.

The Pro-Med Face Cream is more of a treatment than the Herbal Moisture. It contains the Alpha/Beta Hydroxy acids which help to reduce the signs of aging, such as fine lines, sun/aging spots, and adds to a youthful, more even tone to the skin. The Face Firming works much in the same way as this, an anti-aging treatment. I would recommend the Liquid Silk as a must, because it is inter-changeable with any of our products. Then it would be up to you if you want more hydration at night, you could use the Pro-Med Face Cream.

As for the D2O Mist, this is a wonderful, throughout-the-day hydrator. It is especially good for dry climates and and for use when you travel by airplane. You can’t go wrong with any of these products. For making the switch, you may want to start with the cleanser, toner and choose a moisturizer plus the Liquid Silk and you’re set!

You describe your skin as looking younger than your 61 years…great for you! Any of these products will help you maintain and improve on that. I am happy to help, and hope some of these suggestions will direct you on your purchase. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need further assistance.

Which mineral shade for my skintone

mineral makeup jars

Question:

I have light skin (not bronzed) with light brown eyes and light brown hair. What shade would be the best for me as foundation: Cashmere or Barely there? My skin is more warm toned, I think.  Thanks for your help!

Answer:

Thank you for your recent interest in our products! Based on what you have described your skin tone to be, your best bet would be to try our Cashmere base. Our mineral makeup is especially formulated for those with sensitive and/or reactive skin types.  We offer all of our loose base shades in easy to use, try-me size 2 gram shaker jars. These are a great way to try one or two shades for the first time and custom blend the shades together for a more perfect match to your skin tone.  Find a color chart below to help decide which shade is best for you.  We are always glad to help. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

PINK/COOL/RUDDY: If your skin is light with cool, pink, or ruddy (ruddy is deep pink/red) undertones, the shades for you to choose from are: Cashmere (not for ruddy), Cool Beige (great for ruddy), Sea Shell (listed in order of lightest to darkest)

NEUTRAL: If your skin is very light with no pink or minimal pink, you will want Barely There. However, if it is very light but with a lot of pink or red, you will want Cashmere or Cool Beige (for red or ruddy, Cool Beige will look the most natural).

If your skin is very fair you will want Barely There (a neutral shade)

If your skin is light with pink or cool undertones you will want Cool Beige

OLIVE/YELLOW/GOLDEN: If your skin is light with Olive/Yellow/Golden undertones, you will want Oatmeal.

If your skin is in between light and medium, with neutral or warm tones, you will want Cashmere

If your skin is medium with Olive/Yellow/Golden Undertones you will want Canvas.

If your skin is darker than medium, but not ethnic, you will want Sand Dune. Very tanned skin or Asians can wear Sand Dune. It is a dark deep tan color.

Cool: If your skin is medium with cool tones you will want Seashell or Cocoa.

Dark: If your skin is ethnic and medium brown to dark your color selections are: Cocoa (cool), Sand Dune (warm), Caramel (warm), Espresso (neutral). (listed in order of lightest to darkest)

Mineral formulas

Question:

Rosacea controlled

Rosacea controlled

I would like to know/what is difference from say bare minerals and the mineral formulas now sold at drug store? I have rosacea and even these products make it flare.

Thanks…

Looking for something that will work and not irritate

Answer:

Thank you for your recent interest in our products! There are so many mineral makeup formulas out there, you really need to do some research, especially since you stated you have rosacea. When you’re looking at mineral makeup either online or in the stores, make sure you read the ingredients before anything else. The major difference are the ingredients used; are they beneficial for the skin, or simply “fillers”. We recommend our mineral makeup for our post-laser clients, those with rosacea, and people who want a wonderful, natural cover makeup. As you see on our website, our loose mineral foundation contains ingredients such as green tea extract and vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate) known for its antioxidant and moisturizing properties.

Our mineral makeup provides a luxurious coverage, with the benefits of SPF 15-17, although we do recommend using a sunscreen as well. We offer a 2 gram trial size makeup, and this is the best way to try our product. Most of our first-time clients choose 1 or 2 shades to try. This helps to customize a perfect shade for your skin tone. As you will see by reading through our testimonials, we have many sensitive clients that truly love our makeup. There will, of course, be those who are ultra-sensitive to our ingredients, but really the only way to tell is to give us a try!

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if we can be of further assistance. You will also find an abundance of information on our website. Thank you again and have a Happy New Year!

60 years old with sensitve skin that seems to break out

Question:

older woman

older woman

I am 60 years old with sensitve skin that seems to break out from a lot of products that I have used. I am interested in getting a product that will help reduce lines in the face as well as providing collagen, as well as giving an even skin color as well as giving moisture to the face. so in looking at products, I thought I needed to have the ingredients of Vit. C, Hydroquinine or glycolic acid antioxidants and whatever else will help the skin. I do not use a peel at this ime but feel that I ned to do so. Is there any one product or product line that will help with these thoughts and what products would you reccommend.

thanks

Answer:

Thank you for your recent interest in our products! Based on the information you have told me, I will recommend the Pro-Med Retinol Face Cream, a light, rapidly absorbed sheer cream with a unique combination of high potency levels of Retinol, Vitamins E & C, Alpha/Beta Hydroxy Acids and natural Squalane. Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate, Retinol) and Vitamin C encourage new collagen formation. Pair it with the Pro-Med Retinol Eye Cream, and you are on your way to smoother, softer, more hydrated skin!

As you do not currently use a peel, I would recommend our Microdermabrasion Peel to start with. This is available on it’s own, or in a couple of different kits. Some of the kits have a handy brush set, and some include a wonderful, soothing Willowherb Serum. You cannot go wrong with either of these products. Eventually, you may want to add the glycolic acid peel into your routine. I would say to start with a 30% Glycolic Acid Peel. This product is also available in either a kit form, or on it’s own.

Please find additional information for each of these products on the website, or if you need further assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact me during our business hours of 9AM-5PM EST, Monday through Friday. I will be happy to help! Happy New Year!
