Glycolic Acid vs. Salicylic Acid – Which Works Better as an Acne Treatment?

A chemical skin peel is an effective method used to rejuvenate the skin, treat acne, and improve the skin’s overall appearance. While glycolic facial peels and salicylic acid peels were at one time solely performed by dermatologists, physicians, or skin care professionals, there are now at home peels which are just as effective and yet much less expensive. When it comes to acne, these two common face peels both have their advantages.

Glycolic Acid Peels

The alpha-hydroxy acid, Glycolic acid, which is derived from sugar cane, is the smallest AHA molecule. Glycolic acid penetrates the skin quickly and easily to break up the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin. Newer skin cells are uncovered and with continued use, glycolic facial peels will increase skin cell turnover and boost collagen production. This same shedding of surface skin also clears the pores of blackheads and debris which results in an improvement of acne. Glycolic acid is one of the most effective acne treatments available and overall is considered to be relatively mild so as not to irritate the skin too badly.

Glycolic peels provide gradual improvement with continued used over a period of weeks. Glycolic facial peels are safe for nearly all skin types and come in varied strengths starting at 10%. This allows those who want to use at home peels to find the right glycolic acid peel best suited for their own skin.

Salicylic Acid Peels

Whereas glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) which is derived from hearts of sweet bark & willow tree bark. In the skin care industry, salicylic acid products are used as a topical acne treatment and a chemical peel. Salicylic acid has been proven effective as an anti-inflammatory agent that also has the ability to dissolve and clear out sebum found in the pores. It is a bit stronger and involves a less gradual process than glycolic acid but for those with sensitive skin it can be used in lower strength concentrations in cases where glycolic acid peels are not well tolerated. As an added benefit when used regularly, salicylic acid products help protect skin from sun damage as it has the ability to absorb ultraviolet rays. Salicylic acid peels should not be used as often as the glycolic acid peels, as the peeling effects last a bit longer. When using salicylic acid peel products, it is recommended that you take a break in treatment after a period of use for best results.

As the Saint Louis University School of Medicine published in a study where glycolic acid and salicylic acid were compared in effectiveness at treating acne stated, “both types of treatments were similarly effective” for improving facial acne. If you have more sensitive skin, you can try a course of glycolic peels first and if you find you are not tolerating it well or are not happy with the results, move on to salicylic acid peels instead.

New shades added to Ultra Sensitive Mineral Makeup line

We’ve recently added two new shades (with a third coming soon!) to our line of Ultra Sensitive Loose Mineral Bases.

Please find the shade comparison chart below for those of you who may have used our Original Loose Mineral Base in the past, but now want to give our Ultra Sensitive a try.   Ultra Sensitive Loose Mineral Base is a must for anyone with Rosacea , acneic or  reactive, sensitive skin.

Naturally preserved and completely free of irritants, we’ve taken the best qualities of mineral makeup and applied them to our new Ultra Sensitive Loose Mineral Base: a light-weight feel with the option of layering for more coverage as needed, the simplicity of an all-in-one concealer and foundation, it’s non-comedogenic and bacteria-resistant properties, it’s natural & inert ingredients, and it’s natural anti-inflammatory properties. All of these properties leave you with the best qualities makeup can offer while leaving out those which can add to those sensitive skin issues.

Silky, weightless and very forgiving, Ultra Sensitive Mineral Base goes on easy and feels like nothing at all, naturally. 60 years old with sensitve skin that seems to break out

older woman

older woman

I am 60 years old with sensitve skin that seems to break out from a lot of products that I have used. I am interested in getting a product that will help reduce lines in the face as well as providing collagen, as well as giving an even skin color as well as giving moisture to the face. so in looking at products, I thought I needed to have the ingredients of Vit. C, Hydroquinine or glycolic acid antioxidants and whatever else will help the skin. I do not use a peel at this ime but feel that I ned to do so. Is there any one product or product line that will help with these thoughts and what products would you reccommend.

Thank you for your recent interest in our products! Based on the information you have told me, I will recommend the Pro-Med Retinol Face Cream, a light, rapidly absorbed sheer cream with a unique combination of high potency levels of Retinol, Vitamins E & C, Alpha/Beta Hydroxy Acids and natural Squalane. Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate, Retinol) and Vitamin C encourage new collagen formation. Pair it with the Pro-Med Retinol Eye Cream, and you are on your way to smoother, softer, more hydrated skin!

As you do not currently use a peel, I would recommend our Microdermabrasion Peel to start with. This is available on it’s own, or in a couple of different kits. Some of the kits have a handy brush set, and some include a wonderful, soothing Willowherb Serum. You cannot go wrong with either of these products. Eventually, you may want to add the glycolic acid peel into your routine. I would say to start with a 30% Glycolic Acid Peel. This product is also available in either a kit form, or on it’s own.

Please find additional information for each of these products on the website, or if you need further assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact me during our business hours of 9AM-5PM EST, Monday through Friday. I will be happy to help! Happy New Year!

Bacteria does not use contraception

Which leaves population control up to you. Benzoyl peroxide is considered the most effective over-the-counter medication for acne. It reduces the numbers of the P. acnes bacteria by taking the environment one step beyond inhospitable—to truly lethal. Benzoyl peroxide breaks down in contact with skin, releasing oxygen which kills the anaerobic (active in the absence of oxygen) P. acnes bacteria. And while P. acnes has been shown to develop resistance to some antibiotics, it cannot form resistance to this particular path of antibacterial action. Benzoyl peroxide also dissolves keratin—a protein that can block pores. Skin RX Clinic Treatments Follow the Science

At Skin RX Clinic, we’ve developed products that address the biological process of acne development, to treat breakouts quickly and safely and prevent reoccurrences. We know the importance of using a three-pronged approach to acne skin care—daily cleaning, regular exfoliation and bacterial population control. Our four-piece daily cleaning and treatment kit, the Acne Control System, is gentle, even to sensitive skin, while removing surface oil and debris and controlling excess sebum. It includes an advanced sunscreen, which is very important whenever an acne regime is being followed, to counter the tendency of most acne treatments to increase solar sensitivity. SkinRX Clinic’s 15% Smoothing Gel offers deep cleaning and exfoliation as an effective-strength all-day or all-night glycolic acid treatment, or as a series of glycolic acid peels for those with sensitive skin. The End-Zit mask is a therapeutic, professional-strength product that contains materials which draw impurities and oils away from the skin without stripping moisture. Our two strengths of the effective medication Benzoyl Peroxide fight bacteria while tailoring treatment to your skin’s sensitivity and the severity of acne problems.

Bacterial overgrowth is the enemy. The severity of acne ranges from papules—small pink bumps that can be tender—all the way to cysts— the deep, painful pus-filled pimples that can cause scarring. The more bacteria, the worse the problem. So the goal of treatment is to minimize the damage by minimizing bacterial growth.

Bacteria love a ‘messy’ environment. Anything that can block pore openings and impede free flow contributes to clogging and breakouts. That makes regular and thorough removal of surface oil, dead skin cells and make-up critical to prevention and treatment. However, harsh cleaners or determined scrubbing can irritate skin, increase inflammation and make acne worse (just like picking at pimples). The healthiest regimen combines gentle but effective daily cleaning and regular exfoliation through glycolic peels or microdermabrasion.
